Though Marine Protected Areas have been established last year, it is still not enough. There has been a lack of funds and staff that is happening so the project cannot really flourish.
The findings of the study, which was published in the journal "Nature" on March 22, stated that only nine percent of all the Marine Protected Areas have the sufficient number of staff. Meaning, 91 percent lack of people is present. Additionally, 35 percent of the 433 studied MPAs have the lack of funds or the needed budget to support the project. The conservation of the marine animals and their homes do not only depend on the place and the climate change, it also needs the capacity of the people and the government for it to work, according to the study.
Marine Protected Areas are very effective way of saving the ocean and its biodiversity. It includes marine reserves, sanctuaries, parks, and no-take zones. These areas are picked because of the marine animals and their home need protection from climate change and global warming reported Science Daily.
The largest Marine Protected Areas are in Hawaii. The PapahÄnaumokuÄkea Marine National Monument is just recently created and is 582,578 square miles big. Since it is new, not much is going on like lack of funds or lack of people. However, other protected areas are lacking very much, therefore not getting any improvement. Moreover, the study found out that stakeholders do not really make the decision. Only about 13 percent uses scientific monitoring to inform their management about what is happening to the marine protected areas, stated Mongabay
On the other hand, all Marine Protected Areas have better fish stocks than the unprotected ones. The fish population grew at almost 71 percent in the marine protected areas. On the other hand, it really varies if the protected areas do not have any lack of funds of lack of people. There should be more people and budget for the MPA to work better and be preserved perfectly, the study concluded.
