Genetically modified crops have been an argument to many. Now, The battle of it benefits are once again set on the table as the Britain's Princess Anne have said that it has some benefits. It has sparked a rivalry between the Princess and her older brother Prince Charles as his stands that GM crops would be an environmental disaster.
In an interview, Princess Anne said that she is planning to grow genetically modified crops on her farming estates. She even doubted that the technology has its downsides.
The view of Princess Anne has an opposition as Prince Charles is an avid campaigner for organic products for a very long time. He once warns that rapid spread of the genetically modified crops would result in the biggest disaster environmentally of all time.
According to BBC "Farming Today" program, Princess Anne said "GM is one of those things that divide people. Surely if we are going to be better at producing food of the right value, then we have to accept that genetic technology is going to be part of that."
The law of the European Union strictly controls the authorization and use to grow genetically modified organisms. However, last October, George Eustice who is the environment minister said the British government is considering a "future arrangements" for the regulation of genetically modified crops after Britain leaves the bloc.
Thus, when Princess Anne was asked if she would use genetically modified crops or livestock on her own farming lands in Gloucestershire, western England if the law will allow; she said "Yes." "To say we mustn't go there 'just in case' is probably not a practical argument, I do think gene technology has got real benefits to offer, which will have maybe an occasional downside, but I suspect not very many," according to Reuters.
Meanwhile, the Princess Royal view with regards to genetically modified crops has long differed from what Prince Charles is standing. As the next in throne is the patron of the Soil Association that campaigns against the genetically modified produce.
