Humans sweat on a daily basis as a form of excreting wastes out of the body. However, some people experiences excessive sweating even on a cold weather. Could this be that thing called hyperhidrosis?
In an article in Web MD, around 3% of people all over the globe where around 7 million are Americans experiences hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis is usually the type of sweating that is beyond what the body needs to regulate the body temperature. Experts also shared that this phenomenon usually goes undiagnosed since most people think that it's just normal.
However, hyperhidrosis can lead to a lot of inconveniences to someone experiencing it. Usually, it starts during puberty where most people happen to have excessive sweating on their palms, face, and even their armpits. This type of hyperhidrosis which is only found in small areas is referred to as the focal hyperhidrosis, according to Science Daily.
Another type is the generalized idiopathic hyperhidrosis which is present in larger areas such as in the entire back of a patient. There is also the secondary generalized hyperhidrosis which is also present in large areas of the body but it is usually caused by other phenomenon such as menopause or diabetes.
Although hyperhidrosis poses no serious threat, people who are experiencing it firsthand usually live a life with awkward socialization. Some patients noted that they find it difficult to give friendly gestures to other people such as hugging or a simple handshake. Others also shared that hyperhidrosis required them to change clothes every now and then. And on some extreme cases, it also ruins relationships as some patients tend to isolate themselves to avoid humiliation.
Good thing, hyperhidrosis of any type can be treated. Dermatologists actually recommend patients to have their cases evaluated beforehand as some cases may differ from the other. But, usually, they prescribed patients to have antiperspirants which have aluminum salt as a key ingredient in controlling excessive sweating.
