For 60 years, Sidney Moore aged 77, and his wife Jean aged 76 have spent nearly every day of their lives with each other. When they were tested positive of COVID-19, they decided to fight the deadly disease in hospital beds side-by-side because they 'don't do apart.'

They were rushed in an ambulance to a high dependency unit at Whiston Hospital on April 10 and requested that they be kept together and they were granted by their request, Mr. Moore said in an interview with St. Helens Star.

The couple "don't do apart"

Moore, a former engineering lecturer at St. Helens College and who is now recovering at home with his wife said that being together in the hospital while fighting the disease did help them understand what was going on since Jean is not able to hear well.

He thanked all the hospital staff for their courage in going to work every day. He also said that they are grateful to them in helping him and his wife from being admitted the ambulance staff were brilliant and until they finally recovered the staff were absolutely superb.

They were terrified during those moments but they were looked after so well by the hospital staff.

They were discharged from the hospital on Wednesday April 15, and are now on recovery at their home. Their children, a son and twin daughters, are leaving so many care packages and grocery bags in their garden that Mr. Moore said they are close to being overfed.

Although they still have coughs and a lack of energy, their appetites have come back already. As of now, their health condition is slowly improving and they are making sure that they will fully recover after everything that they have been through, reported by The Mirror.

The highlight why it is important to stay at home

The couple got married in 1964, 5 years since the first time they met when Mr. Moore was 16 and Jean was 15. Together, they had three children, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Nick, a nurse who cared for the couple says that he will never forget the experience of caring for the elderly couple. For him, it was an honor to care for Sidney and Jean and he is so pleased that he and other hospital staffs were able to keep them together in the same ward. It really helped keep the couple's and also their spirits up especially because the couple kept the staff smiling as well.

He added that he is delighted that Mr. Moore and Jean are doing so well and he knows that the two of them will continue to look after each other. The Daily Mail reported that on behalf of the entire team, he sends their very best wishes to the couple.

"It is so pleasing to share the recovery of Sidney and Jean. Their special story stands out among the many patients we have successfully treated and allowed home. The fabulous staff who have waved them off are returning to the care of our patients and this underlines that we must do all we can to help them and protect our NHS so please stay home, said Rowan Pritchard Jones the medical director of St. Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals Trust.
