Over 80% of Japanese households have a bidet seat for their toilets. So why does America has not caught on with the craze yet?
According to Aryan Aminzadeh, the Creative Director for Toto USA, the Americas division of the Toto Global Group, and one of the world's largest plumbing manufacturers, about 99% of Americans do not use bidet seats.
The Benjamin Franklin Plumbing gave five reasons why Americans do not own a bidet yet. The first reason was that Americans being once part of England follows its customs in not using bidets. In that sense, Americans are like the British in toilet habits.
Secondly, Americans are unfamiliar with bidets. They would often ask what a bidet is when they travel to different places and sometimes end up using it in all sorts of curious and inappropriate ways, according to the plumbing website.
Third, American homes are not plumbed for bidets. Fourth, many of them are too shy or uncomfortable when talking about "bathroom stuff."
Lastly, using toilet paper is more of a cultural thing. What other culture may consider dirty, some finds it clean. Americans grow up using toilet paper, and using a bidet can be a complicated and uncomfortable task. Basically, if it is not broken, do-not-fix-it mindset.
But with the world on lockdown, and many people are hoarding toilet paper, it is probably best to learn how to use one to save toilet paper and to be worry-free if toilet paper go scarce.
