The family of a man from North Carolina is suing Google, alleging negligence, as they believe Google Maps directed Philip Paxson to drive off a collapsed bridge, leading to his tragic death in September 2022. This devastating incident resulted in Paxson's drowning after his vehicle plummeted 20 feet into a creek below.
Incorrect GPS Direction Led to a Father's Death
The lawsuit claims that a significant portion of the Snow Creek Bridge had collapsed in 2013 and remained unrepaired. On a rainy night, Google Maps guided Paxson to take this route as he was returning home from his daughter's ninth birthday party.
Tragically, Paxson, the sole occupant of his Jeep Gladiator, lost his life in the incident. His wife had taken their two daughters home in another vehicle earlier that night.
The family alleges that Google failed to update its maps despite multiple users reporting the bridge's collapse over nearly a decade. To compound the situation, there were no barriers or warning signs in place to alert drivers to the perilous condition of the bridge.
Alicia Paxson, Philip's wife, conveyed her astonishment at the tragic incident, explaining that their daughters ask about the circumstances of their father's death. She finds it challenging to explain to them, just as she, as an adult, cannot understand how those responsible for GPS directions and bridge maintenance could display such a heartless disregard for human life.
The family asserts that a routine navigation system update could have prevented this tragic death. However, it remains uncertain whether Google will ultimately be held accountable for the incident.
More so, determining responsibility is a complex matter. The North Carolina State Patrol noted that the original bridge developer had dissolved. The lawsuit, on the other hand, implicates multiple private property management companies as accountable parties.
Google, unsurprisingly, had limited commentary and is prepared to contest the lawsuit in court if necessary. Google spokesperson José Castañeda expressed condolences for the Paxson family and emphasized their commitment to offering accurate routing information in Maps, stating that they are currently reviewing the lawsuit.

How Accurate Is Google Maps?
Google Maps is a widely used navigation tool, facilitating easy navigation, business location, and exploration. It has transformed navigation and exploration through smartphones. It offers convenience in finding routes, avoiding traffic, and uncovering nearby places of interest. Yet, the accuracy of Google Maps remains a frequent concern for users.
This application relies on GPS, Wi-Fi, and cell tower signals to pinpoint the user's location and calculate optimal routes when they search for destinations. Additionally, it offers real-time traffic data to help the user steer clear of traffic jams and reach their destination more efficiently.
GPS technology is typically accurate, providing location within a few meters or less depending on receiver quality and satellite availability. Google Maps generally offers accurate directions but can sometimes provide outdated or incorrect information due to road changes or traffic conditions.
Its coordinates are considered accurate, with a margin of error of a few meters, utilizing GPS, cell tower triangulation, and Wi-Fi signals. Accuracy may vary based on factors like signal blockage or interference, but Google Maps is generally reliable for navigation.
Users can report inaccuracies, and Google reviews and corrects them, ensuring ongoing map accuracy and improvement. This collaborative approach keeps Google Maps reliable and up-to-date.
