Qaisar Maqbool, co-author of the study, emphasizes the importance of sustainability, saying, "One of the goals was that we minimize the use of synthetic reagents."

UV light triggers photocatalysis, the fundamental process of this self-cleaning paint. This light energizes the electrons in titanium oxide nanoparticles and produces highly reactive hydroxyl radicals. Following their interaction with airborne contaminants, these radicals transform them into less dangerous compounds like water and carbon dioxide.

The researchers modified the paint's structural composition to include phosphorus, nitrogen, carbon, and other components, enabling it to perform well in sunlight.

The modified nanoparticles have shown remarkable performance in removing pollutants in laboratory experiments, with up to 96 percent elimination of tested contaminants possible. While it's important to note that environmental conditions like temperature, humidity, and pollution concentration may affect real-world performance, the technology holds great promise in our quest for cleaner air.
