Surprising but true, that running a marathon creates physical stress that ultimately results in kidney injury. A recent report creates an uproar among the people about this fact.
Any kind of Kidney injury can lead to serious problems as the organ works as a filter in the human body. It is true that marathon or long-distance running reduces the risk of obesity, diabetes and other health diseases. Even long-running increases physical activeness.
Now marathon or a long run to cover 26.2 miles consecutively can be very stressful and a reason of acute kidney injury, CNN reported. A recent study reveals that the runners can face a short-term injury and recovers from it within two days. The study was published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases on March 28.
The study raises some serious questions about the impacts of the strenuous activity like a marathon. Previous researchers revealed that exhausting activities like harvesting sugarcane, mine work and others in the warm climates can be responsible for severe kidney damage. But, the latest report surprises all and at the same time increases panic.
Dr. Chirag Parikh, Professor of Medicine, and his team researched and studied a small number of participants of the Hartford Marathon in 2015. The research team collected blood samples and urine samples of those participants. The samples were collected before and after the marathon to see the impacts on the kidney, Yale News stated.
The participants of the said marathon had to cover the above-mentioned 26.2 miles. Dr. Chirag Parikh and his team analyzed different indications like proteins in Urine, serum creatine levels, and most essential kidney cells. The aim was to see the condition of the Kidney.
The test result discovered that 82 percent of the runners participated in the research study were the victims of the AKI or Acute Kidney Injury. The National Kidney Foundation provides a detailed report about the AKI. Actually, it indicates a specific condition that unveils kidney can't filter the wastages from the blood. In a word, marathon running appears as a strenuous activity that can be harmful to the health.
Dr. Chirag Parikh says that the condition of the kidney of the marathon runners is same like that of the hospitalized patients. Here Parikh indicates the condition of those patients who suffer from medical and surgical complications. The researchers have revealed several causes behind this problem.
The reasons include increasing body temperature, a lower rate of blood flow to the kidney during the marathon running. Another important cause is dehydration. It is obvious that more study is absolutely necessary to have the final word. One thing is also clear that stressful activities always don't bring benefits to the human physique.
