Bad Hair Day? Here's the Science Behind the Frizz

Ladies are particular about their hair. There are instances where frizz becomes a challenge. Here are some tips to combat frizzy hair.

What is it?
Frizz comes about when that layer of hair gives room for the passage of air into your hair, leading to swelling of hair strands. Consequently, the hair becomes dry and fizzy rather than smooth and shiny. Unlike straight hair that often remains the same even in humid weather, curly hair usually gets dry and frizzy due to dehydration.

Many reasons lead to hair being dehydrated:
· Drinking less water daily and ignoring a balanced diet.
· Your hair rubbing against dry materials as a result of not sleeping with your hair covered in silk or satin accessories.
· The oil naturally secreted by your scalp not cruising down to the strands. Happens mostly with kinky and coily types of hair.
· Insufficient deep hair conditioning, sometimes using inappropriate hair products for your hair's porosity levels.
· Using a shampoo that dries hair.
· Using too much protein that lacks enough moisture. This compromises the balance of moisture balance to protein.
· Chosen moisturizers not penetrating the hair shaft.
· Medications used taking a toll on the hair.
· Use of several chemicals that damage the cuticle like hair-dye and bleach.

Products to Contain Frizz
Products used for curtailing frizz are likely to contain silicone. Silicone has a tendency to attach to hair hence creating a barrier that stops humidity from penetrating the hair shaft. The trick is therefore to use a shampoo that has a hydrating quality as well as deep conditioner and treatment with fatty oils among other nutrients before styling.
In my tutorials, you will hear me say now and again that I fix moisture before my hair dries. I use heat protectants that contain silicone during my hair wash-ups. It is a necessity for humidity protection when using styling products.

Oils that fight Fizz
If you wish to fight fizz without styling aids, there are several products with necessary ingredients. These are;

  • Argan Oil- protects hair from elements like humidity by sealing cuticle.
  • Sunflower oil- Contains a huge structure which does not easily penetrate hair shaft unless used in hot treatment with oil. It contains linoleic acid as well as a fatty acid that is good for hydration.
  • Olive oil- Has a small molecular structure that penetrates strands. It contains vitamin E that is ideal for moisture and growth.
  • Avocado oil- Has saturated fat hence small molecular structure to easily penetrate the hair shaft.

Tips to Help Prevent Frizzing After Hair Styling

  1. Coat fingers with oil before fluffing or styling curls.
  2. Areas that are prone to frizz can be refreshed using diluted protein-rich conditioner.
  3. Use an ionic blow-dryer as they reduce frizz.
  4. Sleep in silk and satin accessories. Also, use a satin pillow.
  5. Use hydrating shampoo or that which restructures hair.
  6. Deep condition hair regularly. This can be alternated with repair and moisturizing treatment.
  7. Use a micro-fiber towel to dry hair.
  8. Purchase hair products that are free from alcohol.
  9. Use leave-in that protects hair from heat.

These tips should help keep hair free from frizzing. What is needed is patience. Any time you change your regimen, be patient with the new product you are using. Also, expect that when you live in areas with high humidity, the hair is likely to frizz even when you use many types of hair products.
