Coffee vs. Gallstones

Are you an avid fan of espresso concocted drinks and beverages?

Do you consider yourself a "coffeeholic?"

Coffee is a brewed drink from roasted coffee beans which come from a wide variety of coffee species. Coffee is known to have been the greatest source of antioxidants.

According to the National Coffee Association, coffee is more than just a drink, it is an art, a science, a culture, an economy, and a passion.

Similar to wine-tasting, tasting coffee is considered an art. Coffee brewing uses different brewing equipment including a French press and an espresso machine.

When you start to break down the flavors of coffee, you are exploring its science. The science of coffee also includes the height of the coffee plant, the process of roasting the coffee beans, and the kind of coffee breed.

Coffee was initially said to have been bad for the health because of its caffeine content. Caffeine can cause insomnia, restlessness, increased heart and breathing rate, nervousness, and upset stomach. Dosing a large amount of coffee may result in "caffeinism" which may be accompanied by anxiety, headache, and agitation.

In recent studies, however, it was found that coffee has more health benefits. Drinking the right amount of coffee every day can boost mental alertness, delay if not prevent Parkinson's disease, and reduce the risk of several digestive tract cancer.

According to the latest study conducted at the Journal of Internal Medicine, drinking coffee can help reduce the risk of accumulating gallstones. The study suggests that those who drank 6 cups of coffee or more per day had a 23% lower risk of developing symptomatic gallstones than those who did not drink coffee.

The study also showed that persons who have certain genetic variants had a lower possibility of developing gallstones when they increase their coffee intake. Drinking caffeinated beverages such as coffee and tea with at least 400mg of caffeine each day reduces the risk of gallstone-related illness. The greater the caffeine, the lower the risk.
