University of Bradford's cell biology professor, Des Tobin, explains that hair anywhere on a human's body is important for maintaining skin health. For example, hair follicle contains masses of blood vessels and is rich in stem cells which help the skin heal.

Tobin told the Daily Mail that a wound on the outside of a man's arm with numerous large hair follicles would heal better because of the increased number of stem cells and blood supply. Furthermore, having hair on the body gives person protection against sunlight, and keep the body warm.

But why do women shave their body hair, and why does society sees women with body hair as disgusting, dirty, and unattractive?

In a study conducted by Marika Tiggeman of the Flinders University, she asked 91 men and 107 women to complete questionnaires about their attitudes on women's body hair and why women remove their hair and measure of disgust and sensitivity on women's body hair.

Her research concluded that 98% of the female participants regularly remove body hair, mostly through shaving, and attribute being hairless to femininity and attractiveness. As a whole, her research found that negative attitudes toward body hair are related to disgust sensitivity.

Moreover, Breanne Fahs, of Arizona State University, conducted a dual experiment to assess women's imagined experiences in growing body hair, and their actual experiences. Her study showed an "overwhelmingly negativity toward women growing body hair," according to Independent News.

With these in mind, women have resorted to using different techniques and technologies to remove body hair and make them feel more attractive and feminine. Some shave their body hair, while others use hot or cold wax and some resort to medical treatments.

Additionally, for those looking for something different, they use an epilator - an electrical device designed to remove the hair directly from the roots - as a hair removal method. It works the same as waxing, except that it does not involve strips of warmed-up wax pulled off rapidly by hand.
