There's a commonly accepted belief that some types of doctors can get away with an attitude that they're more than mere mortals. Some would say that attitude is a requirement in some specializations. Surgeons, for example, would be well within their rights to strut around like rock stars, as larger than life figures who hold other people's lives in their hands.

At least that's what TV shows would have people believe. Not that a surgeon with too much self-confidence isn't unheard of, but medical professionals are people just like the patients they treat. Dr. Mark X. Lowney, a double-certified doctor who specialized in both obstetrics and gynecology and cosmetic surgery, is a person like any other.

He might be busier than most, running two clinics and being a partner in a third, but to get the kind of career that Dr. Lowney has, especially with his latest forays into sexual well-being and regenerative medicine with StudioEros, there has to be a strong personality behind the skilled hands and inquisitive mind. Here are three personality traits Dr. Lowney would recommend people develop.

Humility

It can sound weird to hear a plastic surgeon talk about humility, but there's a good reason why Dr. Lowney insists it should be one of the first traits people should start practicing. Life isn't going to be easy, and there are plenty of experiences out there that are just waiting to humble people when they decide to fly too high.

With humility, however, it's possible to enjoy success without being obnoxious. Doctor Lowney's first interest as an OB/GYN was fueled by his desire to support women as they bring new life into the world. That's a sense of service that doesn't come about when someone thinks they're the most important person in the room.

Self-Discipline

Finishing med school and becoming a certified medical doctor is hard enough, but having two certifications? That's not easy to pull off. The work that has to go into it and the sacrifices that need to follow would not let anyone coast on their talent alone.

This might be one of the reasons why Dr. Lowney recommends practicing self-discipline as another essential trait. It would be hard to imagine that a person who's managed to string together as many successes as Dr. Lowney did would be anything but self-disciplined.

Welcoming of Challenges

People often find out who they are when they are faced with challenges. It would be to their benefit to seek the challenges out. Dr. Lowney's idea of challenges is that he expects to find and welcome them for as long as he lives.

For him, challenging himself is the best way to facilitate growth. As far as he's concerned, he'll be stretching his comfort zone for as long as he's on this Earth, finding new ways to defy complacency.
