Study Suggests That Oversleeping Can Increase The Risk of a Stroke

According to reports from the Daily Mail, Dr Neil Stanley, who is an independent sleep expert says that oversleeping could be really harmful for people. More specifically, people who are used to sleeping more than 8 hours a day are more likely to have a stroke than others.

Cambridge University suggests that women in particular, who sleep more than 8 hours a day are more vulnerable to having a stroke.

The Cambridge University research on this by focusing on people with long-term sleeping habits. They found out that people who usually slept more than the average, were more likely have a stroke.

But what surprised them was that when people transitioned from getting little sleep to sleeping more than average, they also increased the risks of having a stroke almost fourfold. According to the researchers, the reason for this huge increase was not clear. Either the person was ill, or maybe there is something about the extra hours in bed that is bad for us.

This was a nine-year study that included almost 10,000 men and women aged 42 to 81. At the start of the study, they were asked about their sleeping habits and the average number of hours that they slept. The same question was then repeated after 4 years during which 346 men and women suffered from a stroke.

After a complete analysis of the results, there was a clear link between oversleeping and ill health. This link was particularly clear for women over 63.

But, the results were still plausible.

The researchers then went ahead and looked at the results of previous studies that involved more than half a million people from seven countries. The link between oversleeping and ill health was confirmed, thus confirming the fact that oversleeping increases the chances of suffering a stroke.

What do you see from these reports? Do you still think that remaining in bed for more than 8 hours is a good idea?
