There has been a popular social media trend involving affordable cosmetic dental treatment. Dubbed "Turkey teeth," the operation repairs the entire set of teeth and transforms them into an almost perfect condition. The name of the trend was inspired by Turkey, as the operation's cheap cost is exclusive in some clinics in the country.
Turkey Teeth Trend
Despite being cheap and somewhat effective for improving the physical appearance of teeth, the Tukey teeth are quite dangerous. Like other clinical repairs, it poses negative effects and long-term risks to patients, especially if not carried out properly.
Trends like Turkey teeth promise rapid solutions to the health of a person. But in recent years, people have committed to these clinical treatments without knowing the risks involved during and after the procedure.
The Turkey teeth include a treatment that uses a wafer-thin material to cover the gum at the front of the tooth. In the past few months, there have been reports that this procedure, also known as dental veneers, worsened the condition of people that travel for it.
This is because the unnecessary veneers they get are usually followed by invasive operations such as fake tooth caps or crowns that involve filling up the gaps between their teeth.
Proper procedures on veneers have low risk when done by professionals. The process was intended to give a person a long-lasting solution for their smiles. But like other dental treatments such as braces, veneers would be harmful and might lead to irreversible damage if not advised by experts and done by unqualified people.
Harley Street Smile Clinic explained in a Liverpool Echo report that their clinics in the UK witnessed the surge of the social media trend in the past few years because of the young people seeking treatment.
These people were misled by the Turkey-based bargain cosmetic dental facilities they saw online, and many had severe problems they did not even know about. The dental work needed to save their teeth's state requires years to complete and is more expensive than veneer operations in the UK, the clinic experts continued.
Effects of Turkey Teeth
Indirect promotions are also factors that induce people to travel to Turkey and experience the so-called change. Some celebrities were also victimized by the failed operations held in clinics overseas, including English model Katie Price, Wales Online reports.
Harley Street Smile Clinic's lead dentist, Maurice Johannes, explained that people should be 100 percent sure about the dental cosmetic procedures abroad they are signing up for.
Instead of getting veneers, many people unfamiliar with the treatment have crowns placed in their mouth, leading to a more aggressive tooth reduction, nerve damage, and root canal complications.
Turkey teeth expose nerves which makes the mouth sensitive to beverages and food. It could also result in long-lasting pain, swelling, and gum infection that might spread to the sinuses and some of the facial bone.
