Does TikTok's Face-Taping Trend Really Work? Here's What Experts Say About This Viral Beauty Hack

TikTok beauty advice can become dicey fast with ordinary individuals making broad statements with little to no data to back them up. Although, that is not to imply that all beauty hacks produced on TikTok are awful. But TikTok beauty trends and advice should be taken with a grain of salt, and it must be ensured that there is evidence to prove the claims.

The latest beauty hack now in TikTok is face taping in which people would put tape on their face either overnight or for a limited time under makeup to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. It has been endorsed by celebrities, but what about the experts?

Face Taping Beauty Trend in TikTok Explained

Face taping is nothing as it has been known for many years now, according to Byrdie. The famous brand of face tape, Frownies, was first made available to the public in 1889 and has long been one of Hollywood's oldest secrets. Leading ladies have even spoken about wearing face tape for events or during filming to make their skin look smoother and wrinkles-free

The beauty hack is a technique that claims to be an anti-aging method against fine lines and wrinkles when placed on areas of the face. The TikTok trend claims that putting it on overnight will ideally constrict muscles and limit motion, preventing frowning or other line-inducing expressions while asleep.

Moreover, face taping is also said to reduce and prevent lines from sleeping on the side and stomach. It can also be used for an immediate and smoothing effect on the face.

Board-certified dermatologist Anthony Rossi, M.D., told Byrdie that face taping is being used by people from drag performers to movie stars to help them disguise wrinkles in strategic places as it gives an instant facelift without the operation.

Frownies, a flesh-toned face tape, may come in various shapes and sizes depending on the intended use. Rounded triangle for the forehead and in between the eyes, while butterfly shape for the corners of the eyes and mouth. Today, there are more variations and colors of face tape that people can choose from.

Face Taping Not a Permanent Anti-aging Solution

Doctors said that, although face taping could give an instant facelift, using it overnight is a moot point as it does not erase wrinkles. But when used in an event, it can hide signs of aging and gives an immediate facelift. They compared it to makeup to cover blemishes but is not a long-term solution or fix.

ABC News' chief medical correspondent, Dr. Jen Ashton said that the method of face-taping has a "very superficial, very temporary effect." She said that nightly face taping is unlikely to cause any significant change to deeper wrinkles.

Dr. Ashton, who works at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, also warned of the side effects of face-taping. One of these side effects is having allergic reactions to the tape, as well as harming the skin as it can remove the top layer of the skin.

She told Good Morning America that the effect of face taping can depend on the age of the person, how much skin damage is present, how much elasticity or collagen there is in the skin, and how much volume was lost due to age. More so, it is possible the wrinkles can form again after a few hours.

Florida-based dermatologist Dr. Roberta del Campo told HuffPost that face-taping could make the skin overcompensate by stretching itself, leading to deeper lines over time because of more forceful contractions.
