Teen Addicted to Cheese and Swearing After Waking Up From Coma

Kai Thomas, 15, has become addicted to cheese and swearing after waking up from a nine day coma. Doctors at Sheffield Children's hospital were forced to put him in a medically induced coma due to his serious health condition as he suffered a massive brain bleed.

It all started in June, when he returned from school rubbing his head saying that it hurts. Then he collapsed all of a sudden. Without any delay his mother called 999 and he was immediately taken to Sheffield Children's hospital. After carrying out scans, the doctors confirmed it as brain bleed. A surgery of six hours was performed to release the pressure on Kai's brain. After that the doctors put him into a medically induced coma to aid his healing.

After waking up he was unable to walk and even speak at first. "Doctors said the trauma of the bleed and subsequent surgery had caused him to regress. He'd also lost his power of speech and movement," Kai's mother told the Daily Mail.

After he regained the ability to talk and walk, his urge for cheese and swearing also increased. "He's addicted to cheese and he can't stop swearing" said Tracey, Kai's mother. "He was screaming, 'F***, b******, s***.' I wondered what on earth was going on. The expletives were coming thick and fast. I went upstairs and Kai was munching down a block of cheese."

Over the next few days she noticed cheese missing from the fridge. His said that previously he liked cheese but presently he is obsessed with it. He devours several blocks of cheese daily and even eats it with cereal. His mother also adds that he was a well-behaved boy and didn't swear earlier but now he is not the same.

According to doctors patients get aggressive after recovering from coma but addiction for cheese is something unusual. A spokesperson from Headway, the brain injury charity, said "There can be physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioural problems as a result of a head injury. No two cases are the same."
