While a TikTok trend might provide some source of entertainment, they shouldn't always be taken that seriously, especially with regard to certain things that might be harmful to one's health. As such, a new popular trend on the platform is resulting in doctors expressing their concerns on how it could cause face alteration.
Microwaving Boiled Eggs
According to Mail Online, the TikTok trend might seem harmless since all it involves is microwaving a boiled egg. However, this has raised eyebrows of some doctors as they share how the side effects of following this trend.
Experts warn that following this trend could lead to life-changing injuries and could damage eyes and skin and even cause face alterations. The videos, which seem harmless, involve people slicing into an egg in order for it to burst.
The idea was that a slice in the egg would then cause a cloud of steam; this trend has started to become very popular. As such, it has already gained millions of views, wherein its virality has some experts worried.
Experts Express Concerns
A University of Michigan ophthalmologist, Dr. Grace Wang, urged against trying the trend saying it could lead to many painful injuries. The medical professional also described how it could potentially alter a person's appearance and face and affect their vision.
Dr. Wang then explained how the hot steam, egg, and explosive force could cause potential burns not just on a person's skin but also their eyes. Mail Online then pointed out that scarring can lead to long-term vision issues.
The injuries can cause potential harm to the cells needed for tissue repair on the eye's front, which could result in serious effects on one's vision.
Thorrun Govind, Royal Pharmaceutical Society's former chair, also highlighted the risks of eye burns and damage saying those were things that can't be easily repaired. According to Govind, if the effects become serious, this may even lead to necessary surgery.
The National Institutes of Health reports that ocular burns can be considered ophthalmic emergencies. They need immediate assessment and intervention to minimize damage to the tissue which happens minutes to hours after the injury.
Exploding Egg TikTok Trend
The incident started gaining traction on TikTok, but there have already been many people coming out and sharing what the trend did to them. One incident involved Shafia Bashir, a 39-year-old from Manchester who was left in extreme pain after doing the trend.
As the poached egg exploded in her face, she sustained many great burns, which occurred around her face. Although the trend had visible effects on her face, a video was uploaded showing how she was recovering from the incident.
The NHS reports that burns affecting the skin's outer layer can take around 14 days to heal. However, depending on the scale and degree of the burn, the healing process could take longer.
