Nobel Prize History

The Nobel Prize website explains that awards have been conferred since December 10, 1901, in commemoration of Alfred Nobel's passing.

Alfred Nobel's will indicates that laureates in physics, chemistry, medicine, and literature receive awards in Stockholm, Sweden, while the Nobel Peace Prize is given in Oslo, Norway. In 1969, a new award, the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences, was introduced in Stockholm.

In Stockholm, ceremonies are typically held at Konserthuset Stockholm (the Stockholm Concert Hall) since 1926. Meanwhile, Oslo's ceremony venues have varied, from the Nobel Institute to the University of Oslo auditorium, ultimately moving to Oslo City Hall in 1990. After the laureate speeches, the King of Sweden presents diplomas and medals, followed by a banquet at Stockholm City Hall.

The Nobel Foundation organizes Stockholm's festivities, with a strong academic focus on science and literature. Alongside laureates and their families, the Swedish King and Queen, Royal Family members, government representatives, and international guests attend. In Oslo, the Peace Prize is presented by the Norwegian Nobel Committee's chairman, followed by a banquet for laureates and guests.

Nobel Prize Significance

The Nobel Prize holds unparalleled prestige within its respective domains, recognizing those who have greatly benefited humanity in the preceding year. Established in 1901, laureates are honored in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, peace, and since 1968, economic sciences.

The 1895 will of Alfred Nobel was guided by his belief in human unity, according to the United Nations. The Peace Prize was given to honor those fostering fraternity between nations, reducing armed forces, and promoting peace conferences.

Over 75 years, the Nobel Peace Prize was granted twelve times to entities like the United Nations and its specialized agencies, with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees receiving the award in 1954 and 1981.
