Brain training apps have been rising in popularity, as they can easily be accessed in app stores. But do brain training apps really work? Is it possible to teach new tricks to an old brain? The answer lies in neuroplasticity.
What is Neuroplasticity?
Rather than being static, the brain is dynamic and has the capacity to rewire itself creatively and astonishingly. This is due to neuroplasticity, which is the incredible capacity of the brain to adapt and reorganize. This phenomenon challenges old notions that the structure of the brain is fixed.
Neuroplasticity refers to how the brain rewires itself as a response to experiences, learning, and even injury recovery.
The term "plasticity" covers the malleability of the brain, which refers to how it is capable of changing. It does not mean that the brain is truly plastic. "Neuro," on the other hand, refers to the neurons, which are the nervous system and the brain's building blocks. Generally, neuroplasticity enables nerve cells to adjust or change.
So Do Brain Training Apps Really Work?
Brain training apps that are backed up by scientific principles can truly yield positive results. These apps focus on the improvement of certain cognitive functions, including attention, memory, and even problem-solving.
As for how these exercises affect the brain, a 2002 study looked into this. The Swedish research team behind the study suggested that using simple computer games could boost working memory among children who have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and adults who are mentally healthy.
However, most studies are conducted with limited sample sizes or are backed up by app developers who want to prove the positive effectiveness of such brain-training games. Because of this, some experts doubt the proposed effectiveness of such apps and activities.
Cognitive scientist Fernand Gobet from the London School of Economics and Political Science thinks that these brain training apps do not affect the brain at all.
While brain training is capable of stimulating particular neural pathways in the brain, boosting connections, and enhancing interbrain region communication, consistent practice is still key. Similar to physical exercise, consistent brain training could result in improvements that are noticeable. One can get better at playing a certain game when the game is played consistently.
However, there is no evidence to support the claim that one will become better at multitasking or in other skills that the game claims to teach.

Generally, brain training games include cards, jigsaw puzzles, word games, and other activities that invoke mental stimulation. However, one may also try out activities that also stimulate other senses. These activities could include painting, baking, or zumba.
Moreover, when one teaches others, the brain also gets trained. As such, doing so enables a person to gain the same benefits when learning new things.
Interestingly, meditating, listening to music, or even trying out a different route could also be great brain exercises.
The bottom line is that activities that make one think are activities that keep the brain running.
Hence, before pressing the download button for a specific brain training app, it is important to keep in mind that not every app is designed to be equal. It is recommended to opt for those that are research-supported and that were developed with experts onboard.
On top of this, the importance of a balanced lifestyle also cannot be negated. Having good sleep, exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, and having novel experiences all affect neuroplasticity.
