Viral TikTok Trend 'Carrot Tan'

The new "carrot tan" fad is the latest trend on TikTok. It claims that eating three carrots daily would give you a gorgeous, natural tan. But how accurate is that, and how healthy is it? While the query is straightforward, the response is not.

According to fundamental biology, after cells digest a meal like a carrot that contains beta-carotene, they split it into two molecules of vitamin A (also known as retinol). Then, numerous essential biological processes like eyesight, reproduction, immunity, and growth use this vitamin A.

However, the entire process of converting beta-carotene into vitamin A is completely within the control of our body. Our bodies modify the conversion of beta-carotene into vitamin A by slowing it down or completely stopping it.

The excess beta-carotene is either expelled through sweat glands in the skin's epidermis or retained in adipose tissue or the liver. This is when an orange "tan" on the skin is possible. And if that occurs, it is known as carotenoderma.

Your skin develops a yellow/orange pigment from carotenoderma, which differs from the color you would get from a sun tan. The soles of the feet, the palms of the hands, and the smile lines next to the nose are most noticeable.

Aside from carrots, parsley, basil, chives, chili powder, sun-dried tomatoes, some dietary supplements, and other herbs and spices contain beta-carotene.

Is Carrot Effective in Giving You a Natural Tan?

According to specialists, eating a few carrots before and now won't impact your skin's color. There haven't been any well-designed studies to investigate the connection between daily carrot consumption and changes in skin color or other consequences.

Isabelle Lux claimed that carrot tan works as she has been eating carrots for years, giving her a natural glow. She added that "carrot tan" can last for months without totally maintaining it.

She clarified, however, that, unlike the trend, two to three carrots are not enough to make one tan. According to her, to establish results, one has to eat at least ten carrots a day because a medium carrot only contains four beta-carotene, and you need to get 30 to 50 milligrams of beta-carotene for weeks to see the "orange glow." She also warned others that overeating carrot can leave one with stains, which may show on one's palms, hands, knees, feet, or face

A case study of one guy who consumed nearly three kilograms of carrots per week (or roughly seven giant carrots per day) revealed that it caused color changes in his skin.

Lux added that consuming too much carrots may lead to Vitamin A poisoning. One with the same condition may suffer from blurred vision, headaches, and seizures. She noted that Vitamin A poisoning is serious, so one should not overdo it. Nevertheless, carrot reportedly works in giving you a tan.
