A woman from Brazil wanted to follow the trendy big lips made popular by Hollywood celebrities, including Kylie Jenner. However, things went awry and left her hideous lips, and she wasn't sure if things would return to normal.
Brazilian Woman Had Lip Filler Allergy
Barbara Martiniano, 27, saw influencers showing off their lips with filler on Instagram. She was moved to get the same enhancement because she didn't think it could cause any issues.
Martiniano, a nutritionist, did her research and learned that the filler could be carried out by trained dentists and aesthetic body modifiers using synthetic hyaluronic acid to achieve the plump pout. So, she visited a clinic in João Pessoa, Paraiba State, to achieve her dream lips.
The brunette said she searched for the type of hyaluronic acid the clinic was using, which was of high quality. She visited the same day, and everything was fine when she left. However, 24 hours later, her lips started throbbing.
According to her, the pain intensified for three days, but she thought it would just go away. The dentist had warned her that the area could be "a little sore."
She took aspirin to numb the pain, but it didn't work. So, she visited the dentist's office. The staff told her that everything was fine.
Martiniano decided to get in touch with a pal who is also a dentist and works with facial harmonization. Her friend told her it was normal, and they did a blood flow test, but they couldn't get any results.
So, she visited the dentist, who did the procedure for the second time. She was concerned that she was only hours away from suffering necrosis, where lack of blood flow causes human tissue to die.
The dentist injected an enzyme to deconstruct the hyaluronic acid. After the procedure, she was sent home. When she was in her car, she received a message from the clinic advising her to take an anti-allergy medication. However, they failed to inform her of the dosage. Martiniano said it was already too late because the allergic reaction had started.
She was rushed to the emergency room because she felt like she was choking to death.
"They [doctors] injected corticosteroids and other medications into my vein," she said. "I cried a lot. I felt a blockage in my throat and a lot of pain in my neck.
Martiniano said, her mouth peeled and withered. It was reportedly "hideous," and she wasn't sure if her lips would return to normal.
She was considering taking legal action against the dentist despite the latter's promise to compensate the costs. The offer was reportedly nothing for her because "I almost died."
Risks of Lip Fillers
Lip filler is generally safe and has a low risk of complications or side effects. Additionally, the enhancement is reversible. If the customer is unhappy, the healthcare provider could inject an enzyme to dissolve the lip filler.
However, it poses risks like bleeding and pain in the area, cold sore reactivation, discoloration, and infection. Tissue death can also occur if the filler is injected into or around an artery.
