Typically, lunar landers function for just one lunar day or two Earth weeks before succumbing to the frigid temperatures of the lunar night. However, Japan's Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) has defied this trend, enduring two lunar nights and transmitting images back to Earth, a remarkable achievement.
SLIM Defies Odds and Explores New Frontiers
Japan's SLIM represents the country's inaugural lunar lander and a significant milestone as the fifth nation to achieve a soft lunar touchdown. Its landing on January 19 faced challenges due to a tilted orientation, resulting in insufficient power from solar panels.
Consequently, its operational window was limited to a few hours initially. However, as the sun shifted position over nine days, SLIM managed to reactivate, showcasing its resilience in adverse lunar conditions.
Following this initial activation, SLIM encountered lunar night after three Earth days, characterized by temperatures as low as -133°C (-208°F), posing a threat to spacecraft electronics.
Traditionally, lunar landers shut down during this period for self-preservation. However, against expectations, SLIM resumed operations upon the sun's reemergence on February 25, defying the norm and demonstrating its capability to withstand extreme lunar environments.
The mission team shared this extraordinary development on Wednesday, March 27, via X, accompanied by a newly captured image from SLIM's navigation camera. Despite landing in a suboptimal position and encountering challenges during the lunar night, SLIM persisted in gathering essential data, surpassing its primary mission objectives.

As SLIM continues its mission, some temperature sensors and unused battery cells are exhibiting signs of malfunction, indicating the toll that the extreme lunar environment is taking on the spacecraft.
