In a pioneering experiment by California-based startup REMspace, two individuals achieved a breakthrough in dream science by communicating while they were in lucid dreams.
The experiment, which involves sending a simple message between participants during REM sleep, could revolutionize how we understand dreams, communication and mental health applications.
First-Ever Dream Communication Experiment
The experiment took place on Oct. 13 and represents the first time communication has been established between two lucid dreamers.
Michael Raduga, REMspace's founder and CEO, emphasized the significance of this accomplishment, saying, "Yesterday, the idea of communicating in dreams felt like something out of science fiction. By tomorrow, it will be so common we won't be able to imagine life without it."
REMspace's experiment involved the use of specialized equipment, including a server, an apparatus for monitoring brain activity and WiFi. The technology allowed for real-time monitoring of brain waves, which helped identify when the participants entered the lucid dream phase, according to MailOnline.
Upon confirming a lucid state, the server generated a word in a unique language and transmitted it to the first participant via earbuds. The individual, while still in the dream, repeated the word, and the reaction was captured and saved on the server.
Eight minutes later, when the second participant entered a lucid dream, the saved message was relayed to her. She then repeated the word upon waking, completing the first known instance of two-way communication between people in a dream state.
Lucid dreaming occurs when a person becomes aware that they are dreaming. This awareness provides the dreamer with control over their actions in the dream, allowing them to interact with their surroundings consciously.
Lucid dreaming typically occurs during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, a phase marked by intense brain activity and vivid dreams.
REMspace's technology capitalized on the unique brain activity patterns of lucid dreaming by monitoring the participants' brain waves and triggering the transmission of a message once the dreamers reached the lucid state.
Although REMspace has yet to reveal the specific technology and processes involved, the experiment demonstrated the potential of combining technology with lucid dreaming.
While REMspace's findings are preliminary, they open up possibilities for various practical applications. If further research confirms the effectiveness of dream communication, the technology could be used for mental health treatments, such as managing PTSD or anxiety, by allowing individuals to confront traumatic experiences within a controlled dream environment.
Skills training may also benefit, as participants could practice complex tasks or problem-solving techniques within a dream.
