More than 4500 years ago since the Stonehenge was built and unfortunately, the reason why it was built was still unknown. But according to some archeologists the people who built the unknown wonder based it for their love to eat barbeque.
A village now called Durrington Wall lies two miles away from the Stonehenge. Researchers said that whoever built the stone lived in the village and based on the evidences found by archeologist, these people loved to party and the food they particularly enjoyed was barbequed. This discovery is based on the remnants of massive feast which also hints that the Stonehenge is a site for a community feast according to the Smithsonian.
According to the study published in the University of New York, roasted Hogs and cheese were the favorite of the people living near the Stonehenge during the 25th century. Compelling evidence was found by researchers on ancient Britons culinary style. DNA evidence also shows the remains of mass consumption of dairy products and hogs. It is assumed to be preserved for high ceremonial or occasional use. Durrington wall was uncovered as the largest preserved stone monument built in Britain. According to study it was used as a settlement for the people who built the Stonehenge.
In a study published in the journal Antiquity, archeologist believed that at the site of Durrington walls lies the residential settlement of the workers of Stonehenge. They discovered artifacts for culinary used and leftovers of the food they ate. Chemical analyst found out that the pot fragments found at the site indicates that it was used to prepare and store meat such as pork and beef and other dairy products. According to Mike Pearson, a British professor, the special placing of milk pots signifies that it is only used in special occasion and not only viewed as a nutritional product alone. The sharing of food products also shows the religion and social connotation in expressing unity.
Mike Pearson also added that animals were brought to the Stonehenge to be barbecued in open air gatherings and be eaten privately in the houses around the Durrington Walls.
