Home Sweet Home: Rwanda Stages Extraordinary Homecoming For Endangered Black Rhinos

Africa had lost many of its fauna species due to extinction and the continent does not want to add its greatest symbol to this growing list. With only a small number left, Africa is on a serious mission to save the remaining rhinoceros Rwanda sets a stage for an extraordinary homecoming for endangered black rhinos.

Disappeared ten years ago in the continent, the number of the species declined from a total population of near 70,000 down to 5,000 in the recent time, based on a report from BBC. Specifically, in Akagera Park in Rwanda, there were 50 black rhinos thriving in the savannah forest but they were last seen in 2007. The African Parks Organization is pressing the panic button as they confirmed an extraordinary homecoming for endangered black rhinos.

According to Phys.Org, the organization said on Tuesday that 20 critically endangered rhino will be moved from South Africa to Rwanda to help save the species from extinction. This transfer, dubbed as an "extraordinary homecoming" for endangered black rhinos will cover the first two weeks in May, which serves to ensure the safety the animals and to promote tourism in the country and the community as a whole.

Experts found out that the causes of the disappearance of Eastern rhinoceros were mainly due to hunting and their loss of habitat, which led to 70% decline in the total number of the species. This unfolding catastrophe has prompted them to find ways to salvage the Africa's greatest symbol and this extraordinary homecoming for endangered black rhinos serve as one great way to protect the deteriorating population. Researchers believed that moving animals together will bring fresh genes for the animals, something that has lost since their population dwindled.

Animal homecoming is not new to Rwanda as the country staged the same transfer last 2015 when it reintroduced lions, which disappeared 15 years ago, in the same park. Now the extraordinary homecoming for endangered black rhinos is yet another milestone for the Rwanda that hosted over 36000 tourists last year.
