The upsurge of Avocado global demand is on the rise as the Chinese Middle Class develops not only the taste of this fruit but most likely of the health benefits that it has. The Chinese middle-class numbering to a staggering 100 million more or less leveled up the demand but supplies are short.
According to Bloomberg, due to weak production output from countries like Mexico, Peru, Indonesia, and California, prices of avocado jumped £21 per box more from its usual price, more than double compared to last year. The Chinese Agriculture Department is trying to grow the local version of the wonder food in the Southern parts of China, but it really is difficult to rear the fruit tree, sources say.
European gastronomists are outraged of the avocado global shortage. British food lovers care more of their avocado supply than the Brexit issue. The social media is also in a stir of their avocado demand that ran out of supply.
David Harvey, a lecturer at the University of Huddersfield writes in the paper, The Conversation, that avocado has its wanton effect among the Chinese middle class due to its newness and exclusivity that were available only from a few retail outlets before the fad. Since the craving of guacamole (Spanish name for avocado) developed in Chinese taste buds, suppliers around the world tried to get a hold of this perishable supply to meet the demand. Unfortunately, demands are not met and prices soared up, reports the Mirror.
Avocado farming needs seven years to grow a full productive avocado tree. This is the reason why demand outstrips supply. The market of avocado took producers 40 years to evolve. The Chinese market wiped it out in a fraction of the time it took growers to develop the avocado economy, reports Physics.Org.
Avocado production is impractical to be grown in mass. It tends to damage the environment due to the requisites it needs such as deep soil on aeration, plenty of water, and warm conditions. Experts say that demand will still be rising and will be that way for a while.
