Without a doubt, the effects of climate change are already here. While scientists and environmental activists agree that large, multinational corporations are the biggest enablers and contributors to climate change and holding them accountable should win half the battle, it is easier said than done. Also, maintaining an active environmental consciousness can help in lessening the carbon emission and therefore reducing our carbon footprint. Here are five ways to reduce our carbon footprint and help save our planet.
UNPLUG ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Generating electricity alone is one of the biggest sources of carbon dioxide emissions, and much so when electronic devices still use energy even when they are powered down. In the United States alone, the phenomenon known as "vampire power" costs up to 19 billion dollars in energy annually. When a cord is plugged in, it automatically harnesses the energy, and thus, when leaving devices plugged, we contribute to our carbon footprints. Keep electronic devices unplugged when unused.
PLANT A GARDEN
There are a lot of easy ways to raise a garden nowadays with the rise of new technology in farming and horticulture like hydroponics and vertical gardening. Plants are a sure-fire way to help reduce carbon footprints since they absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen that humans breathe -- it's a win-win situation! Planting insect-friendly flowers, especially for bees which are responsible for the pollination of plants.
Cities are relatively warmer compared to rural areas because of pavement and concrete buildings, but establishing urban gardens will help lessen this phenomenon known as the "urban heat island" and lead to better cooling. Meanwhile, planting trees can help provide shade for open areas.
EAT LOCAL AND ORGANIC FOOD
Air travel is one of the biggest contributors to carbon dioxide emissions, and it does not help when the trade is mostly dependent on air travel. So as much as possible, eat locally grown food that will help in lessening the carbon footprint created by shipping foods. It will also help local farmers with their agricultural business.
Eating organic products ensures the absence of pesticides and other environmentally harmful chemicals. Avoid processed foods as well, and choose whole grains. It is better for the environment and health.
DRIVE LESS
More and more cities are developing their areas for a peaceful commute to discourages people from owning a car. Cities are investing in bike lanes since people are starting to use bicycles again to travel to and from work or be around town. In the United States, there are over 65 million cyclists, and this figure increased dramatically over the past five years.
Challenge local government units to develop an environmentally friendly city plan where walking and commuting are encouraged, and public transportation is efficient. For instance, the effectivity of public transportation in the United States saves 37 million tons of carbon emission per year.
LINE-DRY YOUR CLOTHES
Compared to using a dryer, line-drying clothes is a healthier alternative. For one, line-drying clothes do not use electricity, that's why it can cut our carbon dioxide emissions. Unfortunately, in the United States, most people prefer using the dryer even though it cost as much electricity as turning on 225 light bulbs and is one of the top energy-consuming appliances in the world.
There are a lot of simple ways to lessen our carbon footprint, but the examples above can be a good start.
