Springtime stargazers are in for a treat this April as super pink full moon is not the only celestial event to look forward this month. That includes a rare chance to see a comet!
Get your telescopes ready and mark your calendar with the following astronomy events:
1. Super Pink Moon
Happening on the first week of April, from the night of 7th to 8th, the Pink supermoon, also known as the April's full moon' is not only the biggest but also the brightest this year! It's going to be bright enough to cast shadows.
Don't assume however that you could see the stark difference in its size and brightness with your naked eye. You will still need the aid of a telescope!
Moreover, don't expect a literally 'pink' moon as its name suggests. The April moon was only named as such in reference to a perennial pink plant called phlox that blooms this month.
2. Earth Day Meteor Shower
Coinciding the world's celebration of the Earth Day is a light show of Lyrid meteor shower on April 22. The first major meteor shower since the first month of the year will bring up to 20 shooting stars per hour starting on the night of April 21.
It's a good sight for stargazers as this year, the night is moonless, meaning darker skies.
3. Comet ATLAS
Splashing in the night sky throughout the month is a recently discovered comet - the Comet ATLAS or the Comet C/2019 Y4. The galactic object discovered December last year could potentially become bright enough for your naked eye to see in the later days of April.
Currently, it remains too dim to see using a telescope but could get much brighter in the next few weeks.
