As the world celebrates Earth Day, the online world was saddened by a photo of the carcass of a humpback whale as it lies washed up at Baker Beach in San Francisco on Apr 22.
Based on a partial necropsy performed by scientists at the Marine Mammal Center, the dead animal was determined as a juvenile female humpback whale.
The Center said that it was 'severely decomposed'but the cause of death remain unknown pending a full necropsy report.
