Based on The Hunger Games, the science-fiction series by bestselling author Susan Collins, the Hunger Games movies have followed the books nearly word for word. However, Lionsgate Films, the studio behind the movie adaptation, made a controversial decision that Mockingjay, the last installment of the Hunger Games, will be split into two parts.
The series is coming to an end with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, which is scheduled to hit the theaters later this year. Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer recently revealed that the studio is "actively looking at some development and thinking about prequel and sequel possibilities" in a bid to extend the franchise.
Josh Hutcherson spoiled the fans by revealing that the second part and the last in the series will be "extremely dark and intense," as reported by a Venture Capital post dated February 11.
Director Francis Lawrence was quoted by Deadline that "fans will now have the chance to see the film in any format they want, which is exciting; we recently saw the 3-D version of Mockingjay - Part 1 before its release in China, and the new level of immersion was really fantastic." Isn't this exciting? This will put the latest installment in the series squarely on the competing edge with Star wars: Episode 7 and Avengers 2 to be the best movie of 2015.
It is not confirmed as yet whether Susan Collins will be writing the screenplay. The producers have found their inspiration in Warner Bros.' move to extend the Harry Potter series. There were speculations that the first part of Mockingjay would end with Finnick and Annie's wedding in District 13 which came true. Rumors also falsely claimed that the film would come to a halt with the death of Prim.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 will hit the theaters on November 20.
