"Mission Impossible 5 was shut down for a little over a week in London after the ending was deemed 'unsatisfactory'," The Hollywoord Reporter reported a few days ago. The film was supposed to be released last Christmas but because the ending was considered 'unsatisfactory', the release date has been postponed. The movie has been rescheduled for release in the end of July this year by Paramount. The shutdown decision on the production is to give space for the writers to rewrite the screenplay and give a better touch to the movie's ending.
The script has been written by Director Christopher McQuarrie, with Tom Cruise as the protagonist and an unidentified and unpaid third person (very likely to be Simon Pegg) had also been cast. The crew will likely make the best use of the shutdown period.
The 5-month timeframe is both surprising and alarming at the same time. The film personnel are going to have to adjust with a very tight deadline. This is going to cost Paramount much more money to fund the movie project as the cast and everyone involved in the production will have to be paid till the movie's release in the end of July.
This is not the first time Paramount has done something like this. A few years back, the production house faced similar issues over the release of World War Z and went so far as to write and create a brand new third act after production was wrapped up.
The same kind of issue was also faced by Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise on the sci-fi film Edge of Tomorrow. The film was constantly rewritten throughout the production phase.
Paramount is so fussy about the 5th sequel perhaps because the 4th sequel was so successful. It grossed $694 million worldwide and apparently, the number one film studio doesn't want to compromise on success.
