The ancient Egypt civilization survived for thousands of years and, during this time, was able to manage to make a lot of achievements that impress even the present time.
According to a Medium.com report, many now wonder what the inhabitants of the kingdom of the pharaohs during this period invented. Essentially, the ancient Egyptians left many priceless artifacts behind, that have enabled scientists to understand their customs and discover more about the lifestyle in the prehistoric land on the Nile. It's unbelievable; although a lot of the inventions were developed at that time, modern humans are still successfully used today.
5 Top Remarkable Achievements of Ancient Egypt
For many people, Egypt is simply a place of beautiful beaches, astounding coral reefs, and a wealth of monuments. One should know that this country's ancient inhabitants formed one of the most innovative civilizations of the ancient world, as evidenced by their outstanding achievements. Here are five of them:
1. Ancient Egypt Writing
It is currently known that Egyptian writing is not the ancient world's form of writing. The Sumerians had developed the so-called "cuneiform writing" five centuries earlier.
Certainly, though, the Egyptians contributed substantially to the development of this area. Inhabitants of the land on the Nile already employed an ideographic and consonant writing system 3,000 years BC.
There were three types of signs in this form of writing: ideograms or graphic signs for whole words, phonograms or the sounds' graphic words, and determinatives or the written word's final signs.
2. Astronomy Discoveries
The ancient Egyptians are also credited with some of astronomy's oldest discoveries. As early as 3,000 BC, in the pharaohs' kingdom, the length of the year was set at 365 days and was split into 12 months.
At that time, three seasons were determined, associated with the flooding of the Nile. These include floods, sowing, and harvesting. Nights and days then were split into 12 hours.
Moreover, the Egyptians also knew the solar calendar, which they created based on the Earths' rotation's cycle around the Sun. They performed the first astronomical observations, as described in a CosmoNova report, and were able to compute the dates of solar and lunar eclipses.
3. Counting through Abacus
Many ancient civilizations developed extraordinary instruments for the facilitation of counting, although the Egyptians were the first to drill holes in stones and then string them.
This happened roughly 500 BC. In this manner, the first true abacus was developed, an instrument that, in a similar form, has survived to the modern time.
4. Ancient Egyptian Scales
The land of the pharaohs was the first scale, as well. The device's invention for measuring weight was perhaps, as described on the Precisa website, dictated by the need to precisely gauge the number of precious metals.
Essentially, the first balance was a double-armed device, supported on a stand and equipped with pans. The weights' role was most likely played by stone sculptures signifying animal busts.
5. Milk-Derived Glue
The fifth great achievement on the list is glue. Indeed, the ancient Egyptians could glue papyrus, wood, and leather. The substance they produced was extracted from the skins and bones of animals. They used glue as well, derived from milk.
