Elon Musk Predicts Every Home Will Have a Humanoid Robot By 2050, Neuralink Could Mitigate AI Threat

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk sees a humanoid robot in every household by 2050. During this week's TED conference, Musk stated that some household activities, including cleaning, cooking, and mowing the lawn, could be delegated to AI robot butlers who have a complete awareness of every family member, room, and object in the house.

Musk, who is also the Tesla CEO and a potential Twitter owner, stated this year that an interesting prototype of a robot he's been working on would be ready by then.

He estimates that the manufacturing of Tesla's Optimus will begin in two years and that mainstream acceptance will arrive in less than a decade.

Human-Robot Possible by 2050; Here's The Catch

Musk took time to absorb that in order to solve self-driving, someone had to solve real-world AI. He added that if someone solves real-world AI for a car, which is essentially a four-wheeled robot, one can apply it to a robot on legs.

He agreed with the interviewer that most households will have a home robot by 2050. However, artificial intelligence (AI) is still a major roadblock.

Musk points out that while firms like Boston Dynamics have demonstrated that it is feasible to create engaging humanoid robots, we are still a long way from seeing robots with the ability to assist in the household.

"Those are two things that Tesla is very good at," he explained per Interesting Engineering.

He continues to add that Tesla is firm at two things. After that, Elon Musk said they have to develop the specific actuators and sensors that a humanoid robot requires.

Making Human-Like AI Could Pose Risk But Neuralink May Help

Musk believes that making robots as human-like as possible will keep AI from running rampant. In response to Anderson's question on the unexpected effects of having fleets of Tesla bots running our houses, Musk agreed per Quartz that there are risks.

Hence, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO warned that the world would have to work hard to prevent a nightmarish outcome in terms of artificial intelligence. SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk have indicated that his other firm, Neuralink, was formed to "mitigate the threat of artificial intelligence."

Musk notes in the interview that a localized ROM chip that cannot be updated over the air would assist in retaining safety features, such as anybody asking a robot to halt, which would cause it to take notice and stop what it was doing. He also believes that "there should be an AI regulating agency."

According to Musk, such a robot will first be used to perform risky and dull work that no one wants to do, and then it will evolve to the point where it can look after people, prepare supper, and mow the lawn, among other things.

Musk stated that an intriguing prototype will be ready by year-end when asked about the timescale for such a robot. He went on to say that they might have anything valuable in at least two years.

Musk added that the cost of a humanoid robot will be cheaper than that of a vehicle, albeit the price would initially be higher until manufacturing catches up and lowers the price.
