Lion vs. Crocodile: Who Would Win?

Lions are powerful mammals and even gained the title "King of the Jungle" for their success in hunting prey even larger than them. But what happens when they meet a fully-grown crocodile, an apex predator of the Nile River and many parts of Africa?

The two animals are built differently, one being a terrestrial cat and the other an aquatic reptile. Nonetheless, the website A-Z Animals compiled five elements that could help determine which one would have the most advantages when they fight:

  • Size- Lions can weigh up to 500 pounds (226 kilograms) and stand at 4 feet (1.2 meters) and grow 8 feet (2.4 meters) long. The largest ever captured in the wild was about 675 pounds (306 kilograms). On the other hand, crocodiles can weigh over 2,000 pounds (907 kilograms) and grow up to 20 feet (6 meters) in length.
  • Speed and Movement- Despite their huge sizes, lions run 35mph (56kph) at typical sprints and 50mph (80kph) at their fastest. On the other hand, crocodiles are slower, with 15mph (24kph)0 speed in swimming.
  • Bite Power and Teeth- Lions have a bite power of around 1,000 PSI, while crocodiles are even better with 3,700 PSI. But both animals use their sharp teeth to break and open their prey.
  • Senses-Lions have an amazing vision that is helpful in low-light settings and can smell other creatures well enough from a distance. Meanwhile, crocodiles have a good nighttime vision.
  • Physical Defenses- Lions rely on their speed and size in terms of physical defenses. They are usually with their pride when hunting. Crocodiles have tough skin, and the safety of their murky habitats protects them.

All in all, lions have an advantage in speed, movement, and senses. But crocodiles win in three aspects: size, bite power and physical defenses. That means that even though lions could put up a good fight with crocodiles, the latter has a higher chance of winning a battle
