A new study on climate change suggests that our planet could get minimal sun rays by applying a massive cover in the sky. The method, similar to how sunblocks work, is a challenging but plausible solution that could cut off the warming the sun gives to us here on the surface.
The study, presented by scholars from MIT, suggests that a massive technology might help us to endure lesser heat from the sunlight that passes through the atmosphere. This concept uses space bubbles that would defer the ultraviolet radiation and become a barrier sheet between the giant stellar body and Earth.
The idea was constructed by experts from MIT's Senseable Cities laboratory. Dubbed the 'Space Bubbles' the project provides a bizarre and seemingly improbable solution that might be our last bet considering the intensity of the situation that human-induced warming has brought us today.
Space Bubbles by MIT
The Space Bubbles could be our planet's final resort if ever that climate change goes too far than what we predicted.
The principle behind the concept was simply inspired by the usual materials we use against the scorching sun every day. The transparent bubble sheet would be flown to space and would be laid out between the sun and Earth.
The researchers explained that this type of solar engineering approach would not contribute to the sea of space debris hovering up above and is fully reversible due to the physics behind the bubbles, which they say could be intentionally disrupted by simply breaking their surface equilibrium.
The Space Bubbles could be constructed through a thin, transparent film made out of materials known as silicon melts. Combined with other effective objects, the sheet could be placed in the Lagrange Point, where the new space telescope James Webb is currently hovering, and shield us from the sun rays that infiltrate the atmosphere, all while maintaining a stable orbit relative to the planet.
Out-Of-The-Box Solution To End Global Warming
The scientists behind the idea say that the likelihood of us experiencing an improvement in our climate is high. The experts note that blocking even just 1.8 percent of the incident solar radiations from entering the planet would significantly help us reverse global warming in an instant, reports The Byte.
The team emphasized that the Space Bubbles are not a one-time, catch-all solution. The sheet would serve as both a complementary and supplementary method and is intended to work side-by-side with other mitigation efforts against climate change.
The current status of the planet's climate is now getting out of hand. If the industrial activities known to harm the atmosphere continue for the next five years, the global temperature will increase by about 1.5 degrees Celsius.
This slight increase is impactful and has the power to melt polar ice sheets, leading to the increase in sea levels that would eventually sink cities located in the coastal regions. Alongside these effects, there are others that will follow, but out-of-the-box ideas like Space Bubbles might really help us and our planet get a better future.
