Last Supermoon of 2022: How and When to Watch Sturgeon Moon This Month

The final opportunity to view this year's supermoons is on Aug. 11. The third and last supermoon of the year will be this one.

According to Life Savvy, the moon will shine throughout the night and reach its peak at 9:36 p.m. ET. However, Space.com mentioned that the full moon would be noticeable over the weekend.

Because the evenings are starting to become longer in August, it's a fantastic time to observe the full moon because the temperature is still pleasant enough to remain outside for extended amounts of time. In more northern climates of the United States, bugs also tend to decline at this time of year.

Sturgeon Moon: August Supermoon Explained

August's supermoon is known as the Sturgeon Moon. The Algonquin tribes of the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada, who saw an increase in sturgeon during this time of year in their rivers, gave the moon its name.

According to NASA, in the 1930s, a book that is now known as the "Old Farmer's Almanac" popularized several Native American tribe names. Because the corn hadn't yet matured, this moon was known as the "Green Corn Moon." Depending on your area and culture, you can refer to August's supermoon by a different name.

Regarding other names, Life Savy mentioned that the fledgling birds that learned to fly during this period gave rise to the Cree term "Flying Up Moon." Then there are the references to crop harvesting during this season, such as the Corn Moon, Harvest Moon, and Rising Moon.

How to Watch Sturgeon Moon

A Meaww report asks the stargazers to watch the supermoon in the east on Aug. 11. About midnight, it reaches its peak in the sky. Early in the morning, it is low in the west. The supermoon not only seems larger but also appears brighter. Be cautious, though. It also falls in the middle of the Perseid meteor shower's peak mornings.

"For best viewing, try to get somewhere with a clear horizon, elevated if possible, and as isolated as possible from artificial light sources. While you're waiting, try spot Jupiter and Saturn towards the south as the moon rises," Edward Bloomer, RGM Astronomer, told Country Living.

Next Full Moon Schedule

A typical Gregorian calendar year, the calendar that most of the world uses, has 365 days. Since 12 lunar months equal 354 days, we may occasionally fit 13 moons a year. However, in 2022, that won't take place.

According to Inverse, the next Full Moon will peak on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 5:59 a.m. ET. The Harvest Moon is the name given to September's full moon.
