Big Players Ready to Define and Develop Metaverse Through a Forum

With vague information about the real definition of Metaverse and what it will look like, the big players are now ready for a forum to discuss it. The forum began with just 35 founding members, but its roster has already ballooned to 1,500 in just two months.

What is the Metaverse Standards Forum?

The Metaverse Standards Forum, which debuted on June 21, 2022, is not attempting to wrangle the specifics of the metaverse. However, the forum sees a chance to bring everyone together at a single table to discuss the fundamental technologies required. The forum believes that the metaverse can better develop and flourish with a more sturdy foundation.

According to IEEE Spectrum, the forum has now revealed that, following two months of prioritization discussions, it has a list of initial priority subjects that will direct the creation of metaverse standards in its domain working groups. The themes cover both simple technical issues like standards for augmented and virtual reality as well as issues with privacy, ethics, and user safety.

Be aware that the metaverse does not yet exist and most likely won't in the coming years. However, there is sufficient industry interest to start the construction process for it.

The Khronos Group, a software organization creating royalty-free standards for innovations like virtual reality, augmented reality, and vision processing, is in charge of organizing the Metaverse Standards Forum.

Metaverse Standards Forum Competing Vision

The MSF serves as a liaison to enhance coordination and trust between the current major commercial metaverse interests rather than as a standards body. Google, Meta, Microsoft, and other companies that use the technology required for the creation and upkeep of virtual worlds are included in the large metaverse, as are the organizations that will establish the standards for those technologies.

Neil Trevett, the chair of the Metaverse Standards Forum and president of the Khronos Group said that what they were doing was casting a wide net because some of the companies and organizations in the forum know each other, but there are lots of people that don't know each other at all.

Although there are a lot of competing hypotheses about how the metaverse will develop, many of them have some things in common. Virtual reality and augmented reality technology will surely be used. The demand for shared experiences will increase, whether they are grand like attending a concert or mundane like getting your driver's license renewed.

Trevett stated he likes the idea that there is only one metaverse and you may switch between various experiences within it because we need a Web analogy.

It will be an evolution of the Internet as we know it now, according to David Morin, executive director of the Academy Software Foundation, an organization working to standardize the visual effects technology created by the film industry.

Morin claims that one way to think of evolution is as a collection of experiences to be lived as opposed to a set of static Web pages that may be switched between. This is comparable to looking through items in a digital Amazon marketplace.

He goes on to say that many of these ideas and efforts already exist in one or more industries or sectors of industries. He claims that the idea isn't entirely original.

Dominque Hazael-Massieux, a member of the World Wide Web Consortium executive team, stated that he believes most people see something similar to the web when they think about standards bodies. You simply go from one area to another and it works, allowing you to carry some of your data with you.
