Neuralink Corp. is working on a brain implant that will allow paraplegic individuals to walk again and treat other neurological illnesses. The federal investigation, which had not previously been revealed, was launched in previous months mostly by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Inspector General. Based on two persons familiar with the inquiry, the Inspector General was called in at the demand of a federal prosecutor. Said one of the individuals; the investigation is centered on infractions of the Animal Welfare Act, which restricts how researchers care for and test certain animals.

Reuters report of dozens of Neuralink research and interviews with more than 20 former and current employees, the investigation comes at a time of enhanced employee dissent about Neuralink's animal testing, which would include people complaining that resistance from CEO Musk to expedite development has led to a significant in botched experiments.
Internal Staff Complaints
According to the staff, such unsuccessful tests have had to be repeated, increasing the number of animals examined and killed. Discussions, audio recordings, emails, presentations, and reports previously unreported are among the company papers.
The USDA inspector general's office declined to comment. Regulations in the United States do not stipulate how many animals corporations can use for research, yet they offer scientists substantial freedom in determining when and how to employ animals in tests. As per regulatory records, Neuralink has cleared all USDA examinations of its facilities.
As said by Reuters statistics and sources with personal knowledge of the company's animal-testing activities, the organization has slain over 1,500 animals, including more than 280 sheep, pigs, including monkeys, as a result of studies throughout 2018. Because the business does not retain reliable information on the number of tests conducted and deaths, the sources described the figure as an estimate. Neuralink has furthermore researched both mice and rats.
The overall amount of animal fatalities does not necessarily imply that Neuralink is breaking any laws or following conventional research procedures. Animal Testing for Faster Research
The creatures are frequently slain whenever the research has been completed so that they may be analyzed post-mortem for scientific purposes. Furthermore, current and previous Neuralink employees argue that animal deaths are far greater than required owing to Musk's requests for speedier development.
Reuters discovered four tests involving 86 piglets and two primates hampered in the past few years by human mistakes through business discussions and papers dating back several years, as well as staff interviews. According to three current and former staff members, the errors decreased the trials' research value and caused the experiments to be repeated, resulting in more animals being killed. The three persons blamed the errors on a lack of preparedness by a testing team operating in a pressure cooker.
Musk has publicly expressed confidence that Neuralink will begin human testing in the coming years. At a recent event, the Tesla and now Twitter CEO stated that he planned to place the gadget in a human's brain within the next six months. Musk has stated that he wanted to begin human testing in 2020, followed by 2022.
Neuralink has already been chastised for its handling of animals. Earlier this year, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a non-profit that opposes the use of animals in medical experiments, claimed that scientists at the University of California, Davis regarded monkeys involved in one of its experiments inhumanely in a study funded by Neuralink. In response to the charges, Neuralink stated that UC Davis' facilities and care met and continue to satisfy federally mandated standards, as reported by The Verge.
