Namibian Siblings' Rough Encounter with a Crocodile
Newsweek reports how the pair of siblings are from the Kavango West region in Namibia. They were simply getting water from the Okavango River within their Ntara village when the unforeseen crocodile attack took place. Nine-year-old Regimiya Haikera got seized between the jaws of the reptiles. The crocodile jaws pressed down into the young girls' inner thigh and ribs on the left side. Her 19-year-old brother Johannes Nadara immediately took action.
Ndara notes how his sister was simply behind him as they moved downstream in order to fill up their buckets. He then heard her scream and upon turning around, he saw her captured by a crocodile. Ndara then jumped right into the waters and held the crocodile's jaws in a battle to save his sister.
The Aftermath of the Crocodile Attack
Daily Star reports how Ndara felt powerless after the encounter as he held his sister. The pair of siblings were then crying by the riverside.
Haikera was brought to the Bunya Health Centre and was later on moved to the Rundu Intermediate Hospital to receive treatment for her injuries.
According to the Namibian, Haikera's condition is stable. Her mother, Solostica Ndara, expresses her thankfulness that the brother Ndara was there to rescue the nine-year-old girl. The father Paulus Haikera also expressed thankfulness that their son had the strength to rescue his sister.
Both Solostica and Paulus are unemployed. They live on onions, tomatoes, and other smaller crops planted in their little garden.
Crocodiles Within Namibia
According to Newsweek, crocodiles across Namibia are Nile crocodiles, to an almost exclusive level. Such kinds of crocodiles are the largest species across Africa. They account for hundreds of deaths and can reach up to 14 feet in length. Unusual cases can even reach more than 20 feet. Across Namibia alone, there are roughly 11,000 crocodiles.
Attacks by these species are prevalent across regions that are filled with these reptiles. Newsweek reports how some estimations propose how 1,000 people get killed yearly because of these creatures.
Moving forward, the Director for the northeastern regions of the Deputy Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism noted is awareness of the accident but referred it to the incident's investigator, Likuwa Moses.
Moses expresses how the crocodile is set to be put down, given how it previously attacked a village goat. Because of such incidents, the creature has been seen to be a problematic animal.
It is also important for the public to be cautious when situated by the river and when waters rise. In such cases of water rises, visibility gets worse and crocodiles become harder to see. It is also important for people to have companions as it is what helped the recently attacked child.
