Russia's state-run media organization TASS reported just last Monday that the country has produced the first batch of "unstoppable" and powerful Poseidon torpedoes. These devices have nuclear capabilities. Newsweek reports how a pro-Putin TV host also noted how these torpedoes are capable of inducing a tsunami that could cover the entire United Kingdom with a tidal wave of radioactive waters worth 500 meters.

Deadly Super Poseidon Torpedoes

According to the Insider, an unidentified source that is close to the country's military forces informed TASS that Poseidon has finished various trials, including nuclear power unit testing. The source also noted how the first set of these torpedoes had been made.

Insider notes how the report of developments needs to be further confirmed by the defense ministry of Russia.

The source mentioned how this first set will soon be brought to the submarine Belgorod, which has a special purpose of its own and is nuclear-powered. The Project 09852 submarine Belgorod has been specifically characterized by Russia as a vessel for research endeavors.

According to Reuters, only a little bit of confirmed information regarding Poseidon is publicly available. Nevertheless, it has been revealed that the device is a mix of a drone and a torpedo that can be deployed by a nuclear submarine. Newsweek also notes how US and Russian authorities have claimed that the torpedo is capable of inducing radioactive swells within the ocean that would result in the uninhabitability of certain coastal areas.

Newsweek notes how the weapons have a nuclear reactor of their own to keep them powered. Research fellow Sidharth Kaushal mentioned that the torpedo has a length of 20 meters and may go as deep as 1,000 meters. Its range also goes beyond 10,000 kilometers.

The Poseidon torpedo could also run as fast as 90 kmph. This is twice the speed of a typical submarine. Such speed levels make it harder to detect the torpedo.

Senior nuclear specialist Shaun Burnie also notes how the Poseidon can yield as much as 100 megatons. This makes it 7,000 times more powerful than the bomb that left Hiroshima shattered.

Idea Behind Poseidon

Reuters reports how the idea of Poseidon was first publicly relayed in 2018. Putin mentioned then that this was a new nuclear weapons strategy and that it would have a nuclear power supply of its own.

The roots of Poseidon can be traced back to Josef Stalin's plans for the then-Soviet Union, as noted by Reuters. These plans covered a nuclear torpedo that had the capacity to devastate US shores.

Putin relayed in his 2018 speech that the torpedo will have an unlimited range and may work in intense depths at a greatly faster speed compared to other torpedoes or submarines.

He notes how these torpedoes have high levels of maneuverability and low levels of noise and are practically impossible to destroy. He noted then that there is no other weapon in the world that is capable of countering the Poseidon.
