Those who visit the Rundle Place shopping mall in South Australia will not get bored because a vending machine powered by artificial intelligence (AI) encourages users to create artwork.
AI-Powered Vending Machine in Australia
Artists Dave Court and James Brown worked with the University of Adelaide's Australian Institute for Machine Learning to build the ARTofficial Truth Machine ATM-001. It is run with AI-powered software to engage people in conversation, Kiosk Marketplace reported.
The innovation houses a display screen, camera, and microphone. It was part of the Adelaide CreaTech City Challenge to engage audiences and encourage investment in Adelaide's public places.
How Does the AI-Powered Vending Machine Work?
When users press the start button, the system greets them and starts an audio discussion after the camera recognizes them.
Based on the "opinion" the machine creates, the human and the device can work together to create an artwork.
The computer adopts a variety of synthetic characters, including Dame Edna Everage, Richard Pryor, and inhuman automation.
Custom-made digital art, poetry written as personal feedback, and plant seeds wrapped in art posters are just a few examples of the creations that have been added to an online collection.
The AI program was developed by machine learning specialists using the GPT-3 language model to produce responses that resemble those of humans, much like the ChatGPT chatbot.

AI Vending Machines for Retail
Vending machines have become better and more innovative. They deliver more engaging customer experiences and offer cashless payments to entertainment - such as the case in Adelaide.
According to Insight Tech, automobiles and vending machines are gaining traction as manufacturers, startups, and retail conglomerates turn to the said technologies. AI and advanced digital displays enable vending machines to be entertaining and interactive to increase sales.
Here are some benefits that AI vending machines offer:
Faster Marketing Time
Vending machines have become super smart. According to the developers, designing and building a complete and customized system is difficult. However, Xiaodong Shi, Engineer at BOE Technology Group, provides an all-in-one solution to make it easy to assemble and install vending machines.
Partnerships Deliver Innovative Vending
Pure Juice partnered with BOE and CSSC to develop an innovative vending machine that offers an appealing user experience that increases engagement and sales.
They have already deployed the systems at major stores and shopping malls in locations including Beijing and Shanghai. Consumers interact with the machine through a transparent touchscreen display, enabling them to see their drink freshly made. Also, customers now have the option to pay through biometric or cashless purchases.
Xiaodong added that facial recognition and AI enable the machine to identify VIP customers, instantly queue their usual orders, and process seamless payment.
Easy to Manage
Vending machine operators can centrally manage multiple systems through the Intel-powered BOE cloud server. Through this, operators can remotely update prices, product information, and advertisements in real time because they are network connected. This also makes inventory more convenient.
