Sex toys have been around since ancient times, the oldest as early as 28,000 B.C. In our modern times, sex toys come in various forms and have become normal for adults. Current statistics show the sex toy industry is valued at over $30 million in 2020 and is expected to increase to $55 million by 2028.
According to the National Health Service, sex toys are safe if used responsibly and kept clean. However, some people experiment with improvised items not intended for that purpose.
A Naughty Game Gone Wrong
In Australia, a 44-year-old drunk man fell asleep wearing nine metal rings on his penis. To save his penis and scrotum, the stainless steel rings, which measure only 1 cm (0.4 inches) in diameter, needed to be cut through using an electric saw with the help of firefighters.
The man wore the heavy-duty rings in the hope that it would make his penis stay erect. After having sex, he fell asleep and woke up three hours later suffering from extreme pain as the rings were still on his penis, which was already swollen. He was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in Queensland, showing a lot of pain and distress while being rushed to the emergency department.
Doctors tried to remove the stainless steel metals using ring and bolt cutters, but they failed, so the hospital endorsed him to the fire brigade. The firefighters used an industrial-style electric circular saw to carry out the procedure while the man was given general anesthesia.
Urology Case Reports confirm that his genitalia and scrotum were swollen, tender, and bruised, so the doctors needed to give him an IV of opioid pain relief. A tongue depressor and gauze were also used as a protective barrier between the genitalia and the saw during surgery. The rings were sterilized using a cool saline solution to prevent a thermal injury from coming from the power tool.
After successfully removing all nine rings from strangling the penis, the medics conducted a cystoscopy where the inner part of the bladder was viewed using a thin camera. The cystoscopy revealed that the urethra of the patient was also irritated and swollen.
Although the patient did not need another surgery, he had minor erectile dysfunction for the next two months.

Proper Use of Cock Rings
A cock ring is a kind of ring worn around the base of the penis. Its primary purpose is to restrict blood flow from the erect genitalia and produce a stronger erection and maintain it for a more extended period of time.
Also known as tension rings and constriction rings, cock rings come in different forms: soft and stretchy, adjustable, or vibrating. Men generally use them because it helps delay orgasm and boosts their confidence in sexual performance.
In using cock rings, experts suggest choosing the least constrictive size for the penis. It is also recommended to be worn while the penis is only semi-erect. A lubricant can be used to slide the cock on much easier. If the man prefers to wear the cock ring over the testicles, it must be slid one at a time. It is important to remember that the fit should not be snug but also not uncomfortable.
