Elon Musk, speaking remotely at an AI conference in Shanghai, expressed his belief that Tesla is on the verge of achieving fully autonomous driving without human supervision. According to Bloomberg, Musk predicted that Tesla could achieve this milestone later in the year, but he emphasized that it was speculative and acknowledged his history of overly optimistic forecasts.
Despite this, the Tesla CEO shared the current progress feels closer to the goal than ever before. Additionally, he commended China's role in artificial intelligence (AI) and expressed confidence in the country's potential to become a global leader in the field. Musk called for increased regulatory oversight from the government to accompany the transformative technology.
Musk's Quest for a Fully Self-Driving Tesla
During his speech at the 2023 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, Musk expressed his belief that Tesla is on the brink of achieving full self-driving capabilities without human intervention. He anticipated reaching the level of full self-driving, categorized as level 4 or 5 according to the SAE standards, later this year.
As per the SAE standards, Level 4 signifies near-autonomous driving, where the vehicle can operate without human interference in specific situations, while Level 5 represents complete autonomy, enabling the vehicle to drive anywhere under any conditions.
According to Mashable, Tesla's Full Self-Driving assistance package is currently at Level 2, requiring the driver to remain alert and ready to take control despite the car offering assistance in certain scenarios. In contrast, Level 4 and 5 autonomy entail more advanced capabilities, such as inputting navigation instructions and then allowing the car to drive autonomously to the destination.
While Level 4 has been partially implemented by Mercedes-Benz in a limited scenario in Germany, no commercially available car has yet achieved Level 5 autonomy.
Musk acknowledged his past inaccuracies in predicting the timeline for fully autonomous vehicles but expressed confidence in Tesla's 2016 and 2017 failed to materialize, but he maintains optimism despite those setbacks. However, considering it is already July, Musk's aggressive timeline of "later this year" for achieving full self-driving raises questions that only time will answer.

Musk Praises China for Its Role in AI
Musk is actively seeking to establish a positive relationship with China and has been outspoken about his concerns regarding the escalating tensions between Beijing and Washington, Forbes reported. The significance of China as the world's second-largest economy and Tesla's second-largest market, following North America, underscores Musk's interest in fostering strong ties with this prominent market.
Moreover, as autonomous driving is a key priority for Tesla's future endeavors, China's potential as a major market for this technology further amplifies Musk's efforts to cultivate a favorable relationship with the country.
In addition to its market significance, China also plays a pivotal role in Tesla's production capabilities, while concurrently presenting competition for Musk's other ventures, such as SpaceX's Starlink satellite communications system. Musk's participation in the Shanghai conference follows his recent visit to China, which marked his first trip to the country since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
During his visit, Musk engaged in discussions with senior officials and visited Tesla's factory in Shanghai. His call for Beijing to introduce regulations on AI aligns with his broader endeavors to exercise control over this transformative technology.
