However, a new study found that tea consumption is associated with slower biological aging. This has been observed in those who drink green tea regularly.
Researchers from China's Sichuan University examined the relationship between tea drinking and longevity using information from around 14,000 participants aged 30 to 79.
In addition to being asked how many cups of tea they drank each day, participants had their fundamental biomarkers for aging examined. Two to four years later, the individuals were evaluated in a follow-up study.
A clear pattern emerged from this data -- consistent tea consumers who drank modest amounts of tea were linked to slower biological aging.
"The relationship suggested that consuming around three cups of tea, or 6 to 8 grams of tea leaves per day, may offer the most evident anti-aging benefits," according to the researchers.
Tea contains several chemicals that may be responsible for its possible anti-aging effects, albeit this association does not necessarily imply causation. Tea has a lot of antioxidants and polyphenols, which may help to decrease inflammation, remove harmful byproducts from biological processes, and speed up cell turnover.
Additionally, it has been suggested that polyphenols are crucial for maintaining our gut flora, which affects immunity, metabolism, and cognitive function.
