A new report shows which cities across the US are the most and least AI-proof. This was based on five main criteria, including job diversity, job availability, and the population growth rate of the state.
AI Domination Putting Jobs at Risk
Workers who are based in primary tech hubs should think about looking into large and coastal metro areas if they want to prevent losing due to artificial intelligence.
Researchers examined data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to examine the total number of jobs available across cities and determine the economic diversity range in these areas. They then examined the economic growth rate as well as the number of jobs with a low risk of being dominated or taken over by AI.
They computed the average scores from 50 most populated US cities to know which ones had the highest susceptibility to AI domination.

Most and Least AI-Proof US Cities
According to the report, Phoenix, Arizona, is the country's most AI-proof city. In contrast, Providence, Rhode Island, was found to have the highest susceptibility to job loss associated with AI.
It also found that people who are working at tech hubs like those in San Francisco, San Jose, Raleigh, and Austin have the highest level of job security. The report notes that these cities are also likely to be safe, as AI-related jobs are bound to become the new norm. This could lead to more jobs within the industry.
However, for industrial cities that are hyper-specialized and mainly focus on manufacturing, relocating could be worth considering. These areas include Tucson, Connecticut, and Louisiana. When a huge portion of a city focuses on a single industry, such as manufacturing, it becomes at risk of having AI replace jobs.
The report recommends those who are concerned about their career amidst AI domination to move to a city where economic growth and job diversification would imply the relevance of humans in the coming years.
Most high-ranking cities when it comes to AI safety are large state capitals as well as major metropolitan areas. This is because they have a more diverse industry range that could offer more job security amidst the advancement of AI.
In Phoenix, which earned the top spot, there are around 95,000 job openings across various industries. This combined with its 2022 economic growth of 1.2%. Such findings make it an ideal city for work.
In contrast, job availability in Providence is less than one-third that of Phoenix. The city only has 24,500 job openings and 0.1% economic growth in 2022. The report notes that just one-fifth of Providence's job openings are AI-proof. Overall, this makes it the worst place for escaping AI job takeover.
Jobs At Risk
Some of the jobs at risk of being taken over by AI include technical writers, budget analysts, and web developers. In contrast, firefighters, pipelayers, and barbers have the lowest risk of getting replaced.
The jobs with middle-risk are veterinarians, chief executives, sales managers, and interior designers.
On the other hand, jobs that will be in higher demand are those that are tech-based, such as those of NLP (natural language processing) scientists, machine learning engineers, data scientists, and software developers.
Olivier Sabella, who serves as the vice president of LinkedIn Talent Solutions, explains that they are seeing a higher AI skill demand appear in various geographies and industries.
