Honest Company, the firm founded by actress Jessica Alba that sells "safe and eco-friendly household and baby care products" is now under fire as consumers claimed their sunscreen does not give them sun protection at all.
Consumers took to social media their dismay about the company's SPF 30 sunscreen, which Honest promotes as with "broad-spectrum, mineral-based protection." They also claimed that they got burned while using it and that it "honestly doesn't work."
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, sunscreen products should use up to 25% of zinc oxide, but according to the investigation conducted by NBC Chicago, Honest Company only uses 20% of the compound, sometimes even as low as 9.3%.
Then, there's the story of one consumer, Gretta Stabler from Naperville, Illinois, who told NBC that she used the sunblock to her 6-year-old daughter who was at the pool. After applying the lotion four times, she got sun burnt after three hours.
"She got really burned on her arms, shoulders, legs face, pretty much everywhere. I was angry," Stabler said.
The Honest Company, however, stood by its word that the products that they're selling are safe and efficient. In a statement, the Honest Company reiterated that their products are compliant to the standards of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The company also explains that the products should be used as directed: apply 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapply after 80 minutes. Their products were also tested by a third party, as mandated by FDA.
"The number of complaints received on our own website about our Sunscreen Lotion constitutes less than one-half of one percent of all units actually sold at honest.com," the press statement continued.
The Honest Company, already making billions of dollars in sales annual, has already enjoyed a sold-out of its sunscreen spray and sunscreen lotion, their website explains.
