Apple CEO Tim Cook has announced the new Apple TV, coming out late in October. The new box, still simply called Apple TV, was unveiled at the company's September 9 event in San Fransisco, while introducing also the new big-screen iPad and new iPhones. He believes that the future of television is apps.
Apple's Eddie Cue stated that with an iPhone, people can interact directly on the screen, and they wanted to bring the same connected experience to the television even though it's across the room. Cue added, "and to do that it start with voice and with touch". The Remote has been redesigned with this in mind.
Here are some of the features of the New Remote according to Apple:
The Remote has a glass touch surface across the top where you can easily glide across a set of movies and then stop when you get to the one you want. While watching TV you can swipe up for info, swipe down to go back to the screen.
The remote uses Bluetooth which you can use to turn your TV on and changed its volume. "When you need to recharge the remote, there is a lightening connector, " says Karen Haslam, Macworld website editor, since 2008.
The Interface is everything. That new remote, and its functions, are the most important part of what it makes this version different. I wasn't blown away, but it worked. And the new remote, while not shockingly designed, is "intelligently laid out," says CNET's Scott Stein after spending time with the new Apple TV in the demo room in San Francisco.
He also added, that gaming will depend on how the controller support, and new controllers works with Apple TV and tvOS. But the experience, and interface, feels like a welcome upgrade, a welcome one.
