"Monopoly" is an iconic game developed in 1903 in the United States to demonstrate that a wealth creating economy was better than a monopolistic one. Now, the 84-year-old game has lost one of its iconic tokens called the "Thimble". In a decision taken by the owner company Hasbro, the "Thimble" token has been shown the door ahead of Toy Fair.
According to CNBC, Hasbro took the decision on the basis of the votes that poured in from more than four million fans of "Monopoly" present all over the world. The voting was done to decide which eight tokens would be part of the next version of the game. More than 50 options were given to the voters, including old ones like the "Thimble", the shoe, top hat and Scottie dog as well as new designs like a T-Rex, rubber duck and an emoji.
Hasbro has not yet announced which token will replace the "Thimble" in "Monopoly". It will be revealing all the eight tokens of the new version of "Monopoly" on March 19, a day dubbed by it as World Monopoly Day. The fans of "Monopoly" can lay their hands on the updated version in August.
According to Fox News, this is not the first time that Hasbro has called for its fans to vote for the replacement of the old tokens of "Monopoly". In 2013," Monopoly" dropped its "Iron" token to be replaced by a cat charm.
Reportedly, Hasbro has recently seen some of the best sales figures in the history of "Monopoly". The game segment has been up by 20 percent from 2015 to 2016 which has been revealed in a report by the NPD Group.
"Monopoly" has been one of the best games that have been played by people of all ages for almost a century. Now, with the ousting of its iconic "Thimble" token, there is a clear sign that Hasbro is looking to update the game according to the ever-changing market and the choices of its fans.
