Australia's weather is becoming more extreme as climate change is worsening. The latest summer in the country was its hottest and has broken 205 records. It has been dubbed as the 'angry summer', stated the Climate Council of Australia.
About 205 records were broken regarding intense heat waves, bushfires and flooding. It has plagued Australia in the last three to four months, reported Phys.org. The burning of coal, oil and gas is making the climate change worse. It has brought extreme heat and other weather events in Australia. Australia will experience more of the extreme heat, it will severely affect not just the people but to critical infrastructure like electricity, the economy, health and ecosystems too, the independent Climate Council said in a report.
The Australian summer has had extreme heats ever since because the temperature in the country has increased to 1.0 Celsius since 1910, according to the biannual State of the Climate report from the Bureau of Meteorology and national science body CSIRO released in October. However, the Australian weather will become worse as the heat will worsen. According to ABC News, the east of Australia has experienced extreme heat. In the west, there are extreme rainfalls. Everything extreme, weather related, is happening because of climate change in Australia.
There are longer summer days and the average temperature is at 35 degrees Celsius. This event is going to continue because of the climate change, professor Steffen said. "Even if we could magically reduce emissions to zero tomorrow, we would still have another decade or two where the climate system plays out its built-in momentum," he added. It will take a really long time before the emissions will go down.
Even after 10 years or more, the extreme heat in Australia and its weather will break more records. Australian summer will always be the hottest every year that will pass. A firm and nice law will help to lessen it. Coordination from the people and the government is what is needed.
