A winter storm watch has been issued for the Northeast region following an apparent legitimate shot of a potential snowstorm that might hit the area on Monday evening until Tuesday afternoon. For this reason, residents are advised to check out some important reminders and safety tips to better prepare for the approaching heavy snowfall.
According to the American Red Cross, preparing for a winter storm involves putting up a safety supply kit. A safety supply kit should contain a three-day supply of water that's equal to one gallon per individual per day. Apart from water, it must also have a three-day supply of nonperishable goods and foods that are easy to prepare.
The safety supply kit is also expected to contain several emergency tools such as flashlights, warm gloves, coats, boots and blankets, mobile devices with chargers and a battery operated radio. Another reminder is to include a First Aid kit and a medication kit that packs a seven-day supply of medicines and medical tools such as syringes and hearing aid.
Meanwhile, Red Cross also has some important safety tips that are useful during a winter storm. Reportedly, wearing warm and loose-fitting clothing is recommended to protect one's self from frostbite and hypothermia. It is also better to keep kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors open as this could allow warm air circulation in the area.
Another factor to consider during a snowstorm is carbon monoxide poisoning. That's why it's best not to use a generator, grill, camp stove and several other devices that use gasoline, propane and natural gas inside a house or any enclosed area. These units should be placed away from doors to avoid potential penetration of carbon monoxide into the house.
It is also important to note that the heaviest snow occurrence may happen at around 11 p.m. on Monday until 7 a.m. on Tuesday. In addition, power outages are possible because of the increased accumulation of heavy and wet snow at these times, The Washington Post reported. That said, residents are recommended to stay safe at home during the winter storm period and refrain from traveling to avoid road accidents.
